As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 40,166 people, 16,147 households, and 10,689 families residing in Aliso Viejo. The population density was (3,927.7/miČ). There were 16,608 housing units at an average density of 626.8/kmČ (1,624.0/miČ). The racial makeup of Aliso Viejo is 78.16% White, 2.06% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 10.99% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 3.51% from other races, and 4.66% from two or more races. 11.65% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. 

In Aliso Viejo there were 16,147 households out of which 37.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 23.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average Aliso Viejo household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the Aliso Viejo the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 48.8% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 3.4% who were 65 years of age or older.
